We have these neckband or collarless shirts made specially for us at martialartswushu. Unlike many tunic shirts the neckband is authentically very narrow which means it does not show above the collar. The cotton poplin used has been rewoven exclusively for us from original garments.
They come with one separate collar in the same fabric but can also be worn with any of our separate collars. The collar is a classic shape, neither too pointed nor too cutaway.
These shirts are fully buttoned down the length of the shirt, unlike our grandad shirts which have a half placket so pull over the head.
Standard sleeve length 35in from centre back to cuff.
Please note this fabric can shrink by up to 3% which mainly affects the length, not the width of the garment. The generous length is made to account for this shrinkage.
Collar Studs (ST810) are required to fix the collars to the shirt neckband.

Mistakes happen! We have just had a small batch of our Mess jackets made up in the wrong fabric.
Normally we use a cotton drill but these have been made in a heavier cotton duck. Not ideal but we are selling them off at a much reduced price so bargains are to be had.
They are otherwise exactly the same as our drill version.
Here is the description of the cloth:
"A tight-woven, bleached fabric called cotton duck. The creation of bags and jackets is a great use for this material. Duck cloth or duck canvas are further names for cotton duck. The weave distinguishes Cotton Canvas from Cotton Duck. Canvas has a more uniform weave than Cotton Duck, which has 2 threads down the warp for every yarn along the weft.
Mess jackets are the perfect versatile garment for everyone, from real life waiters to every random servant character who needs to look smart.
They were traditionally worn in the tropics by Military or Naval men in the Officer's Mess, hence the name.

The front or bib of this shirt is pleated in much the same way as earlier shirts but the square under-arm gussets finally gave way to the set in shoulder.
These shirts are made up in an excellently authentic cotton cambric which has no disturbingly modern easy-care qualities.

Known as boiled front shirts, these have the traditional starched bib front and cuffs.
They were worn on all formal evening occasions by late Victorians and Edwardians with starched wing collar and white tie. The tradition continues today at very formal events such as white tie balls and certain regiments in the Army also insist on them as correct wear with Mess dress They are now virtually unobtainable but we have them specially made for us so the supply is secure.
Made in 100% cotton and feature a loop at the back neck to keep the tie in place and a loop at the bottom of the bib.
This shirt can be used with any of our stiff collars, available separately on the collar page.
If ordering a separate collar, do keep in mind it is usual to add ½in to the neckband collar size so a 15.5in shirt would need a 16in collar.
There is also a placket opening mid chest which enables the studs to be fastened without crumpling the bib.

These shirts are perfect replicas of early C20th formal shirts.
The collar shape is absolutely typical of the period and the collars themselves are made up with a deliberately soft, non fused interfacing which gives an authentically gentle look but they can take separate collar stiffeners. The collar itself is approximately 3in long at the front point.
We use a body pattern which is taken from original garments so the very opposite of slim fit and sleeve length is a generous 35in from centre back neck as standard and 37in extra long.
The majority of these shirts are only available with double cuffs and standard sleeve length. We also offer Single cuff and extra long sleeves in the same style on a separate page. All have traditional long shirt tails.

The Driftwood & Anthracite colourways are now being discontinued so not all sizes will be available.

These traditional fishtail back trousers are cut using authentic patterns and are made from hardwearing British cotton moleskin. They are finished with a strap and buckle at the back along with braces buttons. The fly is fully buttoned and there are deep side pockets.
They are best worn with our button braces as they should sit higher on the body than the modern position which is lower towards the hips.
The fit is generous so if in doubt buy a size smaller. As a guide, we recommend taking a measurement around your navel (high waist). Take up to 4in off this measurement and buy accordingly. With the smaller sizes (28in-34in) we advise reducing by only 2in.
Made in England.
Moleskin was traditionally worn by industrial labourers in late C19th to early C20th as it was more spark proof than other cloths.
Matching waistcoats are available.

Not a very sensible move as red dye is known in the trade as "fugitive" which means it can run.
