Last year we found a very sad silk regency waistcoat in the most fabulous gold stripe. It was in too poor a shape to be useful so we decided to sacrifice it further and cut off a section in order to replicate the silk.

The resulting silk has far exceeded our expectations and we are delighted to bring it back to life as brand new waistcoats. They are cut to an authentic square hem pattern with fully functioning pockets. There are jiggers on the back which lace up for a neater fit.

The original waistcoat had horizontal stripes. We made ours vertical because our modern silk was very narrow in width. Either way is equally authentic for the upper classes of the period.

 Where domestic servants were concerned, the orientation of the stripe denoted whether the wearer was an outdoor or indoor servant. Invaluable to avoid the social suicide of mistaking gardeners for footmen.

Made in England from British cloth, these are proper garments which bear no resemblance to the indifferent items worn at footballers' weddings.

Ebony black is a new colourway in a familiar fabric. Our old Bad Black has essentially a black warp and a dark grey weft but this one has the same black on both. This has exactly the same texture and feel as the other herringbone cloths but the texture is less defined. The surface is brushed.

If one is to believe the fashion plates of the Eighteenth Century, Europe was populated entirely by exquisitely dressed dandies in sumptuous silks and velvet.

We know however that this was not the case and on the whole, the population trudged around in worthy wools and linens or even both together as the quaintly named cloth, linsey-woolsey.

This waistcoat is currently only made up in a selection of odds and ends.

We will be introducing repeatable lines but for now these pieces are only made in small quantities.

These very smart double breasted waistcoats came into fashion around 1850.

After that both single and double breasted were worn.

We have taken the pattern from an original garment altering them only to accommodate today's body shapes.
